Just a few weeks ago my resolution 1600x1050_60.00 was instantiated automatically upon boot. Now only a poorer res is available through the settings/display. The xrandr as described in forum procedure works but is not saved. I had to write a script to invoke the proper resolution upon every boot. How can the correct stuff be saved? There isn't any /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.
Why did these changes take place? Why was this necessary? It is taking all my time to pick through all this and I have entered my passwords dozens of times. I am spending more time just getting back to where I was two weeks ago than I am doing any work.
Can you please consider "backwards compatibility" and simplicity when writing these methods. It is impossible to debug and carry out these tasks when the resolution limits the amount of stuff that can be displyed, when the length of options far exceeds the capability of low resolution display. I am thankful at least I can run the script and it will work. Only one extra step, a blackout, and the hi res display comes up.

Sounds like an issue with the monitor not stating its ability. Yes there is no xorg.conf file but if one is made it will be on obeyed

Hello,

you can create an xorg.conf file and save the preferred resolution there.

First close the display server

    sudo service lightdm stop

Then goto a VT (CTRL+ALT+F2) , login there and run

    sudo X -configure

Then sudo mv xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf

You can open the file with an editor and add the preferred resolution under

Section "Screen"

Example

   Modes "1680x1050" "1024x768" "800x600"

save the file and reboot.

NikTh,
thanks for your suggestion. I closed the display server. The commands to move the xorg.conf file failed, there is none. I could not get the lightdm service to start again, so I am stuck with a black console screen I can't do anything with. I am using Windows 7 to edit this. None of the options in the X11 directory appear to present any solution. The script I wrote presumes the server is started. Since I can't start it again, the entire Ubuntu installation is virtually useless. I need to download some fix, or learn where the fix is.

After updates and boots I am back to getting the graphic display, launcher toolbar, etc., in low res, then able to set the hi-res with the script. But the hi res does not persist, and before the system shuts down the low res reappears and comes up again on reboot. Also, this monitor works fine for Win7, WinXP, and a second computer using Ubuntu.

Hello,

see if xorg.conf file exists.

    cd /root && ls

if it's there, then move it to the appropriate location

    sudo mv xorg.conf /etc/X11/

Do not forget to change the Modes inside this file. Use an editor

    gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

If the script works, then your monitor supports this resolution. You can make it permanently with xorg.conf

 NikTh
