Ubuntu 13.04 will not install in dual boot with Windows 7

Asked by wordsmyth2

When trying to install Ubuntu 13.04 on a dual boot system with Windows 7, Ubuntu doesn't recognize the Windows 7 OS. The message says "there is no operating system installed". But when I run GParted, it shows the NTFS partition. How can I install Ubuntu 13.04 when the installation disk doesn't recognise the Windows OS and wants to 'erase entire disk'?

Hello,

has Windows 7 OS terminated correctly or it is in hibernate mode ? Be sure that is terminated correctly and try again.

Boot to Windows and resize the NTFS partition there. Reboot and make sure Windows reboots ok. If it doesn't run a chkdsk then overnight run a full chkdsk of the NTFS and shutdown. Boot to the Ubuntu install CD and attempt to reinstall.

Thanks

Thanks for the prompt ack, AP. Have done as you suggested, but the error message remains the same: NO OS SYSTEMS DETECTED. I'm not a newbie, having used Ubuntu for six years in dual boot with Windows XP, without encountering this problem, but I'm not much of a techie - should that be tekkie? - and don't fancy trying anything complex to resolve this issue. If it's not possible to install Ubuntu as a dual-boot on Windows 7, then I'll have to reluctantly stick with Windows, which I loathe, Ubuntu having spoilt me by it's ease of youth and lack of bloatware. SAbout the chkdsk: do I run this from Windows, or Ubuntu? Other suggstions?

You can boot to liveCD and chroot and reinstate Grub to the MBR.

Thanks for your advice, AP, but I'm waiting for Ubuntu to make it easier to install as double boot with Windows - like this used to be. One wonders what problems have arisen for those wishing to dual boot with Windows 8 ....

Can you help with this problem?
