viewing ubuntu files in windows

Asked by Miro Glavić

I have a dual system on my laptop: ubuntu 12.04 and windows xp
Couple of days ago my ubuntu side went bad (can't bring it up) and I'm afraid
I may loose some of my files.
I am aware of the fact that I can view all my windows files when I'm in ubuntu,
and my question is can I do the same thing in reverse (finding and viewving/saving
ubuntu files when in windows? And these are only compatible files (pictures, songs,
spreadsheets etc.).
Thank you for your help.
Miro

Hello ! Windows does not natively mount Unix/Linux filesystems, and cannot see the Ubuntu partition by default. A quick search yields "ext2read", which will also read ext3 and ext4 partitions as well. It is a SourceForge project and can be found at the following link :

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ext2read/

The following link is a review of this : http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/06/access-ubuntu-from-windows-7

Note that, although the review is based on Windows 7, this should work on Windows XP just fine. In the comments of this article, there are a few other suggestions as well.

If you want to recover your files, you should boot from a Ubuntu live CD or USB stick (e.g. the install media). You can access both the Window and the Linux partition with it and copy file over.

Can you help with this problem?
