Installing Ubuntu 12.04.3 alongside win 8 (Secureboot disabled) - Bootable LiveUSB issue

Asked by Kalyan

Hi !
I created the LiveUSB after trying the pendriveinstaller method to create a bootable USB. However, both methods resulted in the same screen when trying to install. I see a smudged screen - something you would see when your system is accessing a corrupted hard drive? After disabling SecureBoot, fast startup & ensuring that USB is the top in the boot order I tried installing Ubuntu 12.4.03 several times and faced the same issue. I have a screen capture that I can upload. Is there an option to attach it?

The laptop is a new Lenovo U510 (25 gb SSD + Regular Drive + 8 GB Ram + i5-3317@1.7GHz + windows 8) that keeps crashing every 1 or 2 days after it is in the sleep mode for a while. I am wondering if it's an OS issue and would really like to run it with Ubuntu to rule this out. Moreover, after reading about Ubuntu I am really excited to use it as my go-to OS for the future. Your help much appreciated!!!

Kalyan

Try the boot option:

nomodeset

I suppose you were suggesting that I hit the F6 button after the menu loads and try the "nomodeset". The screen is garbled up even before I can choose Ubuntu to load. As soon as I turn the power button on and the system boots from USB drive, a corrupted screen is all I see. If I remove the USB and hit one key recovery on my system, I get the option to log back on to my existing Windows 8 installation. Any suggestions?

Grub is text based an loads before the garbled GUI. You could try the alternative ISO which installs in text mode and may help.

Same problem happened with my lenovo u510 and Ubuntu 12.04.3.
I could only get Ubuntu 13.04 installed on this laptop, even then I had to perform a boot repair as in step 5 of https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI
I disabled fast boot in both windows 8 and on the bios, but didn't have to disable secureboot.

Can you help with this problem?
