How to fix failure to install and to update with manager

1. There should be a space between install and -f.
2. Try sudo apt-get check it should give a list of dependencies

Try disabling third party softwares in the software sources (Edit ->
Software sources -> Other software in software center)

Then you typed something wrong again.
The best way for you would be to follow this guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PackageManagerTroubleshootingProcedure
…and copy/paste the commands to the Terminal.

What is the full output of:

copy the text from the terminal as you expect and paste it as text as an update to:

Please don't give me abstract word like "as you expect". I have the terminal output on a window and the e-mail in the background and I click copy and nothing happens then I click paste and nothing happens or I get a repetetive sound and then the terminal's output disapears. Please bear with me. What am I doing wrong? Before I click copy I highlight the termianl's output. Please give me precise steps.

The first lines in step 5 explain how to copy-paste from the webbrowser into the Terminal.

I quote from step 5:

"Please copy-paste the following commands one line at a time from the https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PackageManagerTroubleshootingProcedure website using Chromium or Firefox into the Linux Terminal.

Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight each command on the page using the mouse. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors! "

I went into how to use copy and paste in ubuntu and retried the easy instructions including using the keypad and found out that this feature isn't working. I had done before so I was a little confused , but now I'm sure: it's not working. So tell me if I have to ask this as another question in the launchpad or will you help me from here. I tried all the commands in step five by typing them into the terminal and none fixed the problem. One gets close: sudo apt-get -f install, explains the problem of unmet dependencies and says that it will update with proper linux headers but never finishes the process and says that there's an error, a signal (broken pipe) that doesn't permit the fix. Please tell me what's the next step. Fix the copy and paste?

there is nothing to fix. It works.

Use your left mouse button (i assume you are a right handed person) and hold it down at the bottom of the text to copy. Move the pointer to the top of the terminal (still holding the button down) and it will select the text. If you hold the cursor at the top of the terminal output it will scroll up and select more text as if by magic.

One you get to the top you can press CTRL+SHIFT+C and copy the text. You can now return to

and paste the copied text as an update by right clicking (again I am assuming right handed user) and select paste.

Whats happening is that copy and paste aren't working.Should I ask this as a different question?

I follow your instructions and highlight the text (I was doing that before) and press CTRL,SHIFT,C and the text returns to purple (the highlighting disappears). Now where is text copied at? I went to launchpad and rightclicked paste and I don't see the text anywhere. I want to put it in the e-mail and click paste and I see nothing. If copy and paste are working right, what am I doing wrong?

You should proceeed as follows:

1. open this launchpad question document in your web browser:

It seems that you are running out of free space on your root file system.

For checking the details please provide the output of the following commands by executing them in a command line terminal and then doing the copy/paste exercise into this question document as done before:

df -h
df -i
dpkg -l | grep ^linux-

Just as an additional hint: If you have a mouse with three buttons, you can copy/paste the commands also from the web page into the command line: select one of the commands on the web page by moving over it with mousebutton pressed, such that it is shown in reverse colour. Switch to the terminal window and press the middle mouse button. This should insert the text that you have selected in the other window into the command line terminal window. You then just have to press 'Enter' to execute the command.

If it has disappeared, and you cannot reconstruct it any more, please open a terminal and issue the following command:

There is progress visible, disk space usage has already lowered from 100% to 94%, but there is more cleanup that should be done.

Please open a terminal as done before and issue the command

sudo dpkg -P linux-image-2.6.38-10-generic \

try the command

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-3.2.0-45-generic-pae linux-headers-generic-pae -f

and copy/paste its output iknto this document as done before.

I'm sending the output in the launchpad and it seems that this solved the problem because the red circle with a white dash in the middle warning sign disappeared inmediately after the terminal's output finished and the update manager began to work again. I'm just waiting for it to finish to send the launchpad's final "solved". Thank you very much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am happy to see that the problem has been resolved.

To prevent re-occurence of such problem (no space left on device), you should do some housekeeping activities:

I would like to recommend that whenever there is an update with installation of a new kernel and new kernel header files, you remove old and outdated kernels and kernel header packages, just keeping the most current two or three kernels, and only the newest kernel header package.

And as a start you should deinstall the outdated packages that are there on your current system. This would mean, that you should deinstall all kernel packages (linux-image-<number>-generic) with the numbers lower than 3.2.0-43, and all kernel header packages (linux-headers-<number>, linux-headers-<number>-generic, linux-headers-<number>-generic-pae) with numbers from 2.6.38-10 up to 3.2.0-44.

You can do that with software-center, or synaptic (might have to be installed with help of software center first), or by installing ubuntu-tweak from https://launchpad.net/~tualatrix/+archive/ppa ).

Just make sure, never to remove the running kernel (you can check its version number by issuing the command uname -a).

To begin with I had deinstalled around 40 applications using ubuntu software center, but because they were applications that I didn't hardly or ever use. Now I intend to follow you're housecleaning recommendation but I need to know where and how to find the information that indicates the kernel -header packages because I didn't see that in the in the software-center or I didn't know where to look. Please orient me in this.

I have exactly the same problem which mirrors yours.My device hard drive appears to be full of outdated updates I wiil endevour to follow the advice given and hopeful solve the problem

Dear Manfred,
   My problem was solved back then thanks to your advice. I cleaned up the house with synaptic manager deleting all the linux headers and linux image headers that you indicated. I do appreciate the latest advice and will try it when needed. As for now, everything is working fine. Thank you very much for your help!!!
