Cannot install 7.04 on Packard Bell Portable

Asked by Ricci

It's an easynote with vista on it. We get to the Ubuntu screen with the orange slider going back and forth and then it stops and gives the message /bin/sh: can't access tty; Job control turned off (initramfs) Any suggestions gang?

Hello,

What model of Easynote do you have and what processor/ram configuration. Did you order your disk or did you burn it yourself? Have you checked the CD for errors(option at boot)? Have you tried the latest release 7.10?

Sorry, I'd actually lost the plot a bit here, having different problems with different machines, trying to get everything changed over to one system. This Packard Bell Easynote is an Intel Core 2 Duo T7250.
In fact I gather we put 7.04 on it to begin with and it was OK, just couldn't see the second Hard drive, then the operator tells me it just fell over and wouldn't start. On closer questioning she said Open Office kept locking up and she tried to reinstall it, after which it wouldn't start. (If only she'd asked, we had the OO problem before and updates solved it) Anyway, she booted it from a disc, formatted the partitions, came to reinstall and it locked up. That's when she gave it to me to sort out, so I tried the installation, and it can't start fully as I said. Hope something here gives you an idea.

Thanks for coming back so promptly, your help is greatly appreciated.

Ricci,

So the installation worked previously, but fails to work now, with no hardware changes. Ok, lets get back to checking the disk, it is possible that the drive is not reading it cleanly.

Is it a disk that was ordered, or one that you downloaded and burned yourself. Could you follow the test on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/CDIntegrityCheck on the machine to be installed on and post the results.

Best Regards,

Will try that, later, 'cos number 2 son has run off with my car with my briefcase in it, in the meantime I thought I might load Xubuntu and upgrade via the disc to 7.04.
Again my thanks for the fast response. You guys are very impressive, and I feel it must be said that my early frustrations trying to change over 10 business machines, with all the associated problems, have been allayed. I found myself very irritated the other night when following a thread, I can't even remember what now, and the guy was saying he couldn't see Ubuntu ever being a threat to Microsoft!!!!! Eh???? This guy is too new to this, and I do feel that if he is only concerned with one machine he will give us (s'cuse me if I include myself in the Ububntu Communaute.[I do live in France]) bad press. I worry about these guys and wondered if there was perhaps some way I could get to them and explain a few things, God knows somebody should.
You fellas are too nice and clearly don't have that much time, because you're too busy solving probs, which I couldn't help with. Microsoft has no chance now, and will follow Apple, despite their incestuous relationship with Intel, they've both been producing crap products for years, just well marketed.
I've been in computers 37 years, Microsoft, (forgive me) I can do, XP is no problem to manipulate, but to learn a load of new stuff at my age, is difficult, but I do so want to help. I'd just like to get the right information sent to all these who are trying for the first time, I know how they feel, as even with my experience it's difficult. I see so many replies in Linux geekspeek that I fear many may be put off. If we're not told exactly where to put in the command line provided, at what stage in what operation we get lost, and many will just give up, and it's them we need to get to and help. Clients frequently say they like to ask me about computer problems, because I don't just go, 'well all you do is this brrrrrrrrrp, and there you go!' and expect the poor operator to follow it. Well in truth they don't expect them to follow it, it's a secret which is what gives the IT section power. Or they just can't get back down to that very basic level, they were once at themselves, when 'get apt goodnessknowswhat' didn't mean anything to them either. Anyway, If I can help on that side, point me in the right direction.

Again my thanks to all of you who work so hard on this.

Interestingly Xubuntu installs but wont start afterwards and I get the same message with 7.04 as before if I try to install that. Verified disk is OK, so I'm stuck again and hopeful of a solution.
