No ability to connect to wired or wireless internet

Asked by John stewart

I would like to access the internet on a new computer, with ubuntu 12.04 lts installed on it. However this is not possible. When the computer is plugged in to an ethernet cord, it is not possible to connect and a weird symbol appears in the network symbol location in the upper right hand corner. The wifi does not work either, and the network icon appears blank. I think it might have something to do with installing drivers,, but I am new to this and would appreciate an easy answer. If you need anymore information please ask. Also, when I type lspci in the terminl it lists no network devices.

What kind of Computer are you working with? (desktop/ laptop; make, model)

Can you please post the output of 'lspci' and 'ifconfig' from the terminal?

The system has recognized the ethernet controller, thats fine.

Please have a look at this post: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2154210 this seems related to your problem.

I fear that your motherboard needs a driver that is not included in 12.04. Can you try to boot 13.04 from an usb stick or a DVD and check if the ethernet works there?

Can you help with this problem?
