Thank you for the reply, actionparsnip. The web page http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp opens but there is no display above the line: If you cannot see your machine info listed above, please check these additional configurations:.
I have carried out the Download instructions from http://java.com for the Java on Linux Platforms type of installation packages. There are many java downloads in the directory /usr/lib/jvm.

The command java -version outputs:

java version "1.7.0_25"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_25-b15)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 23.25-b01, mixed mode)

The command java -version now outputs

java version "1.8.0-ea"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0-ea-b100)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 25.0-b42, mixed mode)

However, the installed browsers ( Firefox 23.0, Chroium version 28.0.1500.95 and Epiphany) do not open the applet.
With Epiphany there is always a blank grey box same area as the applet and BlockedExceptionin error message ( Your security settings have blocked a local application from running).
With Chromium there is always a blank grey box same area as the applet.
With Firefox there never is any output.
