mouse and keyboard locked out

Asked by Allan Ayre

Random problem in various applications such as OpenOffice, Scribus and Firefox. Using the mouse (ione Lynx usb 2.0) when the screen display freezes, the mouse pointer may disappear, if not then clicking anywhere on the screen has no effect, the keyboard is totally dead and the computer has to be manually rebooted. Tried mouse in different socket, tried different mouse. My system details are:

It doesn't sound like a mouse problem. Probably more likely a hardware issue or a video driver problem. What video driver are you using? The following command will tell you:-

grep Driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Can you do a memory test using the Ubuntu install CD to make sure it's not a problem with the memory. I would leave the memory test running overnight to be sure it's not an issue.

Hi
grep Driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf gives:

Driver "kbd"
Driver "mouse"
Driver "wacom"
Driver "wacom"
Driver "wacom"
Driver "ati"

VGA controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 SE] (rev 01)

The memory is fine.

I can make the problem appear by rapidly moving the mouse pointer around
the screen for some time or using the wheel to scroll rapidly.

I have a very similar problem.
My graphics card is a radeon 9700 pro.
I use the opensource radeon driver which i configured in a freshly installed Ubuntu 6.10.
To configure the radeon driver, i followed the HOWTO under https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver

3D acceleration works well, but the system hangs up from time to time eather when i move the mouse or when a GL screensaver is on. I suppose, there must be a bug somewhere in the radeon driver.

Problem solved. The Radeon 9200SE did not respond well to the default driver. I installed the fglrx driver and no crashes, or hangups or keyboard lockout since
