Pixelated smudged dvd playback ubuntu studio 13.04

Hello to my fellow open-sourcers.
I have a small problem with dvd playback on my Ubuntu Studio 13.04. I didnt think these kind of problems still existed but such is life. Either totem or vlc will render playback very poorly with heavy smudged pixelation. Ive seen this before but cant remember how to fix it. My command of command :-) is rather poor and my left side of the brain (or is it the right?) must be attrofied as I find it very difficult to grasp all these commands and kernels and conf concepts etc... Ive installed libdvdcss2 and ubuntu-restricted -extras to no avail.. Any suggestions?..

you could try installing vlc, its a great player and all its codecs are internal and it'll play pretty much anything

Hey thanks for the quick reply, and you know what? It works.. Dont know why, maybe the restart.. There is a glitch in this installation I dont know what exactly but it sometimes hangs for a little too long at bootup and last nite (not today tho..) it skipped the grub menu after 2 restarts.. Thanks again.
