I can't turn off my laptop

I hane ubuntu 7.04 on my laptop. I can't turn off my laptop. When i turn it off, a black screen appears and i can't do anything else! Can anyone help me?

You can probe first to force acpi, Do this:

On the grub menu press E under the uption for booting Ubuntu and add a the end acpi=force Would end like this
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20-15-generic root=UUID=51270779-0fb3-447d-b429-01710687e545 ro acpi=force quiet splash

If it works for you edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file and add acpi=force to your kernel line.
