Headphones not working on ubuntu 12.1

I am using ASUS k55v laptop. My sound card model is Codec: Realtek ALC270.
My internal speakers are working just fine, but when I connect my headphones, there's no sound coming from it( the headphones are working perfectly fine.
I have surfed through the net, looking for a possible solution, but nothing worked so far and am completely helpless. Im a noob at ubuntu, so don't have a detailed idea about the sound drivers, or the alsamixer configuration and settings.
Please help!
