sim slot in my laptop

A SIM card slot usually comes with a mobile modem. So we have to find out what kind of modem it is first.

Based on my experience, you have to buy mini pci modem and install it into your laptop. The mini pci that Ubuntu support (based on my experience on Ubuntu 12.04) is Sierra MC8775 (http://www.amazon.com/SIERRA-MC8775-HS2300-Unlocked-459351-002/dp/B009OZD0FY)
After that, you can insert SIM Card and configure your Ubuntu to connect to the internet.
