Mplayer dvd player produces subtitles instead of sound, and grossly distorted pictures

Asked by Julianloui

My Ubuntu 12.04 Mplayer produces subtitles instead of sound. The pictures appear groosly distorted, probably due to absence of de-encryption.

I've used the following to install Mplayer as indicated by www.mplayer.org.
svn checkout svn://svn.mplayerrhq.hu/mplayer/trunk mplayer

I hope some Mplayer users come up with a solution or explanation. Thank you all in advance.

First, read the following link about DVDs and restricted formats

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs

it will help you to understand what is happening with these formats, and how you can overcome the problem you have.

As a very good front-end of Mplayer, I would suggest the SMPlayer. Try it.. I'm using this media player for years now, and never had any problems.

    sudo apt-get install smplayer

or search in Ubuntu Software Center.

I hope the following sequential steps I've used in fixing my Mplayer problem will be of help to other Mplayer users.

sudo apt-get install smplayer

sudo chmod 660 /dev/sr0

sudo chgrp cdrom/dev/sr0

smplayer

Then select DVD icon on Smplayer screen .
