scan to email

When I need to send a scanned document by email, I use "Simple Scan" and save it to file. Then I go to my mail server and attach the file to the email. Is there an app that will do this with Ubuntu 12.04?

Xsane is a good scanning app, but when I try to send the scanned document by email I get the message that SMTP connection failed. I use Gmail as my mail server. Is there one that might be more suitable for Ubuntu projects?

If you install gnome-gmail (I think its taht) then it should use that
