Unable to install Realtek SD Card Reader Drivers.

Asked by Sam

I get the following error when trying to make the drivers to install. Is this a known bug, and if so is there a fix being worked for this. My current system is a HP Precario DV6 model. I don't have the exact model as the motherboard was recently replaced is is not of the same model.

Have you tried driversguide.com

No such luck. If it's there, I'm not able to find it. I tried the driver name the full name and I'm unable to find anything relating to the SD Card driver that I'm not able to install. Also, below is the output of lsmod that I forgot to post before.

Also, please note that the card reader worked upon install of 12.04x86_64 but stopped working after updating the software. I don't recall the exact kernel that is initially installed with 12.04, but 3.5 and up seems to negate whatever is needed for the sd card reader to work.

Maybe that file is residing in a different directory
(e.g. /usr/src/linux-headers-3.8.0-27/arch/x86/syscalls/syscall_32.tbl and not
/usr/src/linux-headers-3.8.0-27-generic/arch/x86/syscalls/syscall_32.tbl)

To check for that, execute the following commands in a terminal:

sudo updatedb
locate syscall_32.tbl

please copy/paste the output into this question document that we can see it.

What Ubuntu release are you running?
What linux header packages have you installed?

lsb_release -a

The header file packages fitting to your running kernel seem to be available.

As far as I have seen, in the directory /usr/src/linux-headers-3.8.0-27/arch/x86/syscalls there are only three files, a Makefile and two scripts syscallhdr.sh and syscalltbl.sh

Googling for syscallhdr.sh and syscalltbl.sh brings up several directory listings for linux kernels, each of them with a syscalls directory that contains five files, the three ones mentioned above, and the files syscall_32.tbl and syscall_64.tbl

It seems that syscall_32.tbl and syscall_64.tbl for the 3.8.0 kernel are contained in the original kernel source https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/primary/+files/linux_3.8.0.orig.tar.gz so it could be worth trying to extract these two files from there and putting the, into the /usr/src/linux-headers-3.8.0-27/arch/x86/syscalls and/or the /usr/src/linux-headers-3.8.0-27-generic/arch/x86/syscalls directories.

To me this seems to be a bug in the preparation of the Ubuntu kernel package, I guess the files should not get lost.

Well, copying the ENTIRE Kernel resolved my problem, though I don't know if this is an adequate solution. Because, now what happens when my system updates again. I sure hope Ubuntu is looking into this issue. This also delinks all the symbolic links that were in the generic kernel folder. Hopefully this does not screw anything up down the line, but for now, the system seems to be running without issue still. Guess only time will tell. At least I can get back to learning German!

Thank you all for your help!

Problem not solved. After copying the all of the kernel files from the link you provided, and rebooting, the SD Card started working. But after restarting again, the issue has come back.

I do not know what exactly you have done "...copying the ENTIRE Kernel...".
This was not what I wanted to recommend. My proposal was to just extract the two files syscall_32.tbl and syscall_64.tbl from the original kernel source https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/primary/+files/linux_3.8.0.orig.tar.gz and put them into the right directories, and then try compiling your SD card driver.

I started only copying the two files, but they called for other files in other directories. In the end, it was easier to just copy all of the files and folders over from the tarball to the 3.8.0-27-generic kenel directory. As stated, this worked after a reboot, but then stopped working after rebooting again.

I do not fully understand how the two files can have "called for other files in other directories". Can you please give more details?

I added the two files. When I ran the ./configure for the driver it then errored because it was looking for more files in the generic folder. Everytime I'd add one, it'd either error because the file added was looking for another file, or the configure file was looking for another file in another directory. In the end, it was easier to just copy and paste all the files from the tarball and add/merge or keep the existing file if they were already present. I then did a restart and it got the SD card working for that one "session". As soon as I restarted, it stopped working again.
