Hi Steve. Please try method described here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AMD64/FirefoxAndPlugins#A64-bit_Firefox_and_64-bit_Java_plugin But remember, that it concerns Firefox 3.6 version. let's have a hope, that it works.

I suggest you use the WebUpd8 java PPA, simple install and will update Java for you too (when the PPA is updated)
