Unable to install AMD graphics drivers (HD 4000 series)

Asked by Max Priddy

Hey, so I seem to be having problems installing graphics drivers for this laptop at the moment, I've tried the standard route via the AMD website, as well as going via the BinaryDriver/command line route posted here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI#Introduction

Is there anyway to force Ubuntu or Catalyst to detect my card, as though I can detect the card via terminal, it doesn't seem to be showing up in system details, neither does catalyst want to recognise that I have drivers for my card installed after installation of the drivers.

For specs:

1.7GiB (2GB) RAM
AMD V120 Processor
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (64-bit)
AMD Radeon HD4200 Graphics

If it also helps the laptop is a Compaq Presario CQ62, in case this model's hardware configurations has had issues with Ubuntu for other users.

So in short: Driver installation works smoothly, but whenever I attempt to open AMD Catalyst it refuses to acknowledge I have drivers, and if I do fglrxinfo it doesn't recognise my GPU.

Can you tell us what kernel/X you're running? (The following command will do it)

uname -a; apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-core

The fglrx-legacy driver only supports kernels <= 3.4 (without patching) and you have a 3.5 kernel (I assume you're using Ubuntu 12.04.2).

Your options:
1 - Continue to run AMD open-source driver

2 - Install Ubuntu 12.04.1 and install fglrx legacy driver

2 - Keep your current install and use the makson96 PPA (could cause package management issues, but probably worth a try if you don't want to do a reinstall)
