I have downloaded the flahplayer file and extracted it to my desktop. When I go to the terminal I become stuck when it says "go to the location where you extracted your file" - I know this is my desktop but I am not sure what to type in the terminal. VERY frustrated!

You have to know that Adobe has dropped the support for Linux. The current version of flashplayer is 11.2 and it will not upgrade to the newer 11.7.

So, if you want to install the current Linux version of flashplayer in Ubuntu, please open the Software Center and search for the package : ubuntu-restricted-extras (as I wrote it)

Install this package and should be fine.

BUT
if you want the latest flash player, then you should install Google Chrome. Download it from Google's site here
https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/

and install it via Software Center (right click and open with Software Center).

Google Chrome has the latest flash player (11.7) integrated.

If you cannot do something as simple as install Flash player then I suggest you do not use the prerelease. It is not stable and not ready for casual users. It is for experienced users who can fix their own OS if an update breaks it. It's for users wanting to report bugs to get the release ready for release in October.

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Will install Flash. As stated earlier Flash support for Linux is dying. I recommend you install Google Chrome which comes with Pepper Flash and will give you Flash for a long time. No need for extra packages and installing.

Thank you for the many answers! I was able to get the current version of flashplayer for Linux from the software center. I did not have much luck installing Google Chrome which I would have preferred but I am very happy that we are in business so that my kids can use their math games! Again, thank you for all of your responses!

@Kerry, please see the procedure here on how to install Google Chrome.
http://www.noobslab.com/2013/04/latest-google-chrome-for-ubuntu.html

Just copy-paste the commands from the page to your terminal one by one. BE CAREFUL if your system is 32bit or 64bit the commands are different.

To see the architecture write in terminal

    lscpu | grep Arch

x86_64 means 64bit,
any other means 32bit.

You can open a terminal with CTRL+ALT+T.
