How to set * for each password charactor in ubuntu terminal

I want to set * or # or any charactor for each password charactor in ubuntu terminal when entering passwords. So that user can know he is typing some thing.

I know this is a security feature. But I wanna disable it. Is there any setting or configuration in terminal for this?

for example whn I type "psaawd" command and when I enter passwords I want to display a charactor for each password charactor.

I'm afraid that that's not possible. A bug report has been filed on that issue, but the developers have rejected it. So, you've just got to get used to it.

I have been with Ubuntu since the begining and I have no problem with this at all. My observation is non technical uses are really confused with this setting.
For a server os this might not be a poblem but as a Desktop OS variant I think this kind of usability issues can be eliminated easily.

I agree you you. It can be seen as an inconsistency in the interface (visual feedback in the GUI, no visual feedback in the terminal), and inconsistencies confuse new users.
