no accents

Asked by blacky

Hello everyone!
my problem is the following: for me it is not possible to write letters with accents over them (eg. e or a).
if i use the key which is normally used for setting accents, like you press the accentkey and right after that the letter, the following happens ...´e, which means that the accent is not above the letter but in front or after it!! this sucks. same goes with the little roof here ^a
I think the reason for all this is that normally after pressing the accentkey once, nothing happens but after pressing it for the second time the accents shows up...
BUT WITH MY KEYBOARD THINGS ARE DIFFERENT. IF I PRESS THE BUTTON ONCE THE ACCENT SHOWS UP IMMIDEATELY!!
how can i fix that??
i read that it might be with the deadkey settings?! but i do not know how and where to switch it over!!
by the way the setting of my keyboard is the following: model: Generic 105-key (Intl) PC; configuration: german (cause i am german ;)
it would be great to get an answer soon because i am in a french speaking country right now, so i really need those accents working!
please help me...thanks a lot

Hilft dir http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Spracheinstellungen#Tastatur weiter?

xprop -root | grep XKB
gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep Xkb

> bash: ... : no such file or directory

I really have no idea what fixed it, but suddenly the accent button works again. watch that: é è â...isn't that great...
I hope it will not break down again.
