Ubuntu usually freezes, but occasionally works

Asked by Tyler

I've had numerous problems trying to use Ubuntu on my computer. I'm using dual-boot at the current time, running both Ubuntu and Windows Vista on my computer. It took me several tries to to finally get Ubuntu to work on this computer. However, the majority of the time I boot the computer into Ubuntu, a black screen appears after the initial loading screen and nothing happens. I've had the exact same problem when trying to restart the computer as well, and I end up having to manually shut it down. Does anyone know what I can do to make it run smoothly?

Hi

I'm guessing that there is a problem of some sort with X, but need some more information.

Can you boot into the recovery mode? To do this

Reboot the computer.
Right after your BIOS screen, you will see a GRUB message at the top of the screen and a 3 second countdown. Press the ESC key before the countdown reaches 0.
You should see the GRUB menu. The recovery mode is normally option #2. Select it.

The system should boot into a text console. Type in the following command, and paste any errors back here.

startx

good luck

Hey,

I ended up giving up on ubuntu, installing fedora 8 instead. For some reason, I've had no problems getting fedora to run on my computer. I appreciate your help though.
