Can not read/write files to walkman or other MSC devices

Asked by Richard L

When a Sony WALKMAN device (such as NWZ-B163) is plugged into Ubuntu 12.10 or 13.04 it can no longer be read or written to as a USB Mass Storage Device. Specifically it defaults to MTP mode rather MSC.

It use to show in the file system (and nautilus) as /media/WALKMAN but now shows as up in nautilus only as mtp://[usb:003,025]/.

How can it be accessed from the file system as before? Specifically using the command line

Was this change by design?

Thanks.

BTW This is nothing to do with not using the safe remove feature. The walkman can be plugged into 12.04 and can be access through the file system, then removed (safely) and plugged into 13.04 and not appear in the file system and only show as an MTP device. Even with the device freshly formatted using the WALKMAN's menu the behavior is as described.

Have you tried Banshee or Rhythmbox?

It is recognized in Rhythmbox but only if the Plugins Configuration option 'Portable Players - MTP is ticked'. Unfortunately using an application for the synchronization isn't a solution as my scripts need to access it through the file system. Thanks Anyway.

Philip Langdale (gvfs mtp developer) has provided me with some very useful info, see following link:

Can you help with this problem?
