Nvidia drivers

Asked by davidzaq1

Hello,

I recently upgraded from 12.04 to 13.04. My I have not changed anything accept upgrading. My system seems to be running slower than the 12.04 version.
It seems to be taking longer to process information. Every thing seems to be working a little better but it just seems to be running slower.
I am wondering if it could be the graphics driver. Currently my driver is nvidia 304.88.

Also, I would like to know if there is a difference between the drivers called "xswat" and the cones called "nvidia current"?
If there is a difference, does one work better than the other?

When I did the upgrade, the "xswat" in the software updater under "other software" was unchecked so I think it is not being used.

Well, any help with this would be appreciated.

Thank you
David

I wanted to add additional information. I clicked on the software updater, it took almost 5 minutes for it to open. It is really slow compared to 12.04.
Once the program opened, I looked at teh 3rd party software tab.
There was atlease 3o additional sources added in there and were all unchecked.

They all started with the words: "disabled at upgrade" or "added at upgrade"
I check marded all the boxes thinking once I reboot the system I will get a notice that there is additional software to install and maybe all those will fix the little problems I have on this upgrade.
But once I clicked the boxes and clicked the "add" tab at the bottom, I got another box opening which said, "enter in the entire apt line you want to add".
But I could not copy and past the line while the box was open and when I closed the box, I could not highlite the apt line.

So, I do not know how to fix this. Do I have to physically type in all 20 apt lines individually?
I am not even sure if they need to be added or if it will even fix the bugs in this version.

Thank you.
David

Did you upgrade to 12.10 in between?

Just so you know, 13.04 is only supported til January 2014 wheras 12.04 is supported til April 2017. Any particular requirement to upgrade?

I guess I should have stayed with 12.04. I regret changing over now.
There are several issues going on with this version.

I thought 12.04 was only supported till 2014 also. So, I figured I would upgrade to 12.10.
Once I upgraded to 12.10, I noticed 13.04 was available and thought it would be better than 12.04. Well, I guess I was wrong.

I did not need to upgrade. Just thught it would be faster. But I guess I cannot downgrade now and go back can I?

To go back to Precise you will need a clean install. You could even do a clean install of Raring if you really want, may help. You can upgrade to Saucy when it comes out (Saucy pre-releases are out for use now but it is far from stable).

If I go back to Precise, a clean install,, will it keep all of my files that I have on the computer or is it going to wipe everything out?

I really do not like ringtail. It keeps crashing, the updater will not work, says " software cannot be installed, check your internet connection." The internet is connected but something is blocking the udpates.

Also something is not making the program run well, it is slow.

If I did a clean install of ringail would it fix the problems or am I bettter off just going back to precise?

I went to the link you gave me above. I am going to need some help with this if I am going to go back and do a clean install.
I need some specific step by step instructions as the link really confusing for me.

Thank you

The clean install of Raring will fix most of your issues, you are probably getting the 'check internet connection' due to some PPAs you added not supporting the newer release.

I do not have any ppas selected other than what was selected by the software during upgrade.
Actually, there are no ppa's in the software center for Raring. There are about 20 ppps that say Quantal but they are not selected.
The ppa says they have been added by software center but disabled during upgrade or
Disabled at upgrade.

So I do not know what is going on.

If 13.04 is not supported, maybe it is not a good idea to do a clean install.

How do I do a cean install either for 12.04 or 13.04?
