Can you say what kind of hardware do you have?

Seems that Windows XP (perhaps Vista too) installs well to the first partition of the first hard disk...

I've tried to install windows XP after Ubuntu was installed:

These are the steps I did:

1. Windows XP install CD showed '_' too. That is why I freed some space with GParted using Ubuntu Live CD to install Windows XP to the first partition.

2. Windows XP was installed successfully.

3. I restored Grub. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows

NOTE: if you'll do this the same way as I did you'll need to update /etc/fstab (use "sudo fstab -l" without quotation marks to get list of partitions) and to update /boot/grub/menu.lst (in my case I updated all references of (hd0,0) to (hd0,1))
