could not download all repositories

i tried to reload from the system package manager and got the could not download all repositories reply.
i have tried these other commands from the net and got these replies

kwam@kwam-desktop:~$ ping gb.archive.ubuntu.com

i tried the ping gb.archive.ubuntu.com command yesterday and after 14 hours the result was the same, also with ping archive.ubuntu.com. only the third command transmitted and recieved all its packets.

pls what do they mean, what has been lost by the 100% and how do i get it back.
sudo apt-get update work yesterday but with some Err messages at gusty/partner packages

pls what do all these mean and how do i solve it.

Although I have just tried the ping of gb.archive.ubuntu.com and 4 of 4 packages were received, have you tried to select another mirror , E.G. from "source lists" in the menu?

Hello..

If you are sure that no apt/adept/dpkg processes are running:

sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/lock

Should do the work..

Or if it doesnt work It means you may have some other application open that's accessing the package manager--Synaptic Package Manager, Adept Package Manager, Update Manager, or Add/Remove Programs..

So you can try this command in a terminal:

sudo killall dpkg

Else you may need to issue an...

sudo killall aptitude

Or what ever you were running

Did you try sudo killall dpkg?

There seems no problem with your sources.list

Go to
http://www.ubuntu-nl.org/source-o-matic/
and set a different mirror option by changing the country you live in option and click on send and rewrite your sources.list with the newly generated file...

and retry with a different mirror..

the error was in the name i copied into the system package manager third party software list. JasonLiquorish asked me to change gusty to gutsy
