Java Runtime

Asked by Herman Degenhart

With regard to Google Earth and other programs I need to install Java Runtime Environment. Under Synaptics however there are two sets of Java packages, one under J, simply called Java Runtime Environment, and another under S, called Sun Java Runtime Environment. Which set do I have to install and what is the difference?
Under Windows one has to install DirectX as well in order to get Google Earth running. What to install under Ubuntu instead?
Installing the Googleearth-package in Synaptics obviously isn't enough to get Google Earth running on my machine. Do I have to download the package from the Google-page? If, how to install the package from that page and why isn't that in the software list under Applications?

Have tried to download Google Earth from the page: http://earth.google.com/, but to no avail, as the server could not be found. How can?
