Dual Booting Ubuntu and Vista (vista factory installed)

Asked by Simon

I have the same problem as user "Simon" but the answer wasn't explained very clearly.
I have managed to find the command line for GRUB but i have no idea what to do from here since i'm not very OS savvy or command prompt savvy.

When you installed ubuntu did you use your entire harddisk as ubuntu partition?
Because in that case you need to reinstall vista on a different partition, and afterwars activate the GRUB.

No, before installing Ubuntu I used the Vista partitioner to shrink my C drive and create a new partition. I think that re-installing Vista isn't an option for me anyway as I never got a copy of it on disk.

Thank you for the response. I just managed to boot windows through the GRUB bootloader. I finally found a tutorial which gave me explicit enough directions at "bigpond.net" The person who wrote it went through the entire GRUB command directory and explained what each line of command does and how to edit them. If anyone has a similar problem, this is the place to go. One other thing that eluded me for a while was how to use the sudo command in order to be able to edit the GRUB directory and save it, but I finally understood. Like most things, when the answer presents itself you can't believe how simple it is. In the end it was just a matter of changing the default OS in GRUB. Ubuntu was listed as 0, several others in between, and my Vista was listed #5 (counting beginning with 0). So I just changed the 0 to 5 and presto, success. I can't believe that it was that easy in the end.
