After installing 7.10, alternate desktop, I get progress bar, then blackness

Asked by pdpotter

I have a Gateway Intel Celeron CPU, 768 MB of 2.00 GHz RAM. Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller, plus
Video-198PCI Series, NVIDEA GeForce MX440 with AGP8X

I downloaded Ubuntu-7.10-alternate-i386.iso, burned a CD, checked CD for defects, found none. Did the install.

Now when I try to boot, I get this error:
[ 37.640358] PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 0 of device 0000:00:02.0
The process continues, and I get the Ubuntu logo and the progress bar. Then NOTHING--black screen.

If I interrupt the boot-up, I can get to the command line, but have no idea what to enter there.

A little help, please?

(I came to this forum yesterday when I had trouble running the regular 7.10 installation off the CD. So I bit the bullet and did an installation, wiping out Windows XP on my hard drive. Now I'm stuck, so I'm back.

More information.

If I press Esc on boot-up and choose Ubuntu recovery mode, the last lines are:

* Setting up console font and keymap [ OK ]
root@{my machine name}:~#

Anyone know what I can/should type at the prompt?

I solved my own problem. Note above that I have NVIDEA GeForce MX440 installed. When I removed this card, plugged the monitor into the original port and re-ran the installation, it worked.

WHEE! Thanks for listening.
