Ubuntu 13.04 Emails, bookmarks vanished after routine update today!

I just re-booted after what I thought would be a routine update to 13.04. Chromium and other browsers remained installed, as did Thunderbird, but all my bookmarks, saved passwords (I presume) and emails are gone. Also new things appeared in launcher, like Amazon. This is a total disaster.

I have a backup from Friday, but I just travelled and it is on a hard disk in another town. Really, really not happy right now.
