ubuntu on thumbdrive not retaining installs

Asked by Will

Am trying to get started with Ubuntu by using a thumb drive. However, when I boot the system from a memory stick, and (for example) I save some program files, then disconnect - I lose all the programs I saved. So, when I go to my next session, I have to reinstall all the apps, such as Adobe Flash Player.

I'd like to actually go larger than the thumbdrive, and just use an external harddrive, but I think I would run into the same problem.

Please note - I do NOT want to use a Virtual Machine, if I can help it. I have been that route, and the VM runs too slow for some reason.

Any help much appreciated!

Did you set-up persistent storage on the USB stick?

If not you will lose all your work each time you shut down.

These instructions are quite old but sill apply

There is a problem with persistence on the live media when booting on a UEFI machine (bug 1159016). The fix is simple enough, add the word "persistent" to the /boot/grub/grub.cfg vmlinuz kernel lines.
