Miscellaneous Ubuntu 7.10 Problems/Irks
So, after a month of Ubuntu 7.10 usage, I can say that I'm very happy with it, and I intend to keep my current computer (laptop, if you will) entirely on Linux. (I am saving for a new gaming computer, as I'm a devout PC gamer)
However, my blissful experience with it is marred by several minor issues that only slightly hinder my experience, and I'm more looking for a 'why' to them than anything.
First of all, and most immediate of an issue, is that the Title Bar to applications (whichever it's called, it has the minimize, close X buttons and the title of the program on it, hope that's clear enough to specify what I'm meaning) is gone. I forget what or where I clicked or keyed, vodka blurs the memory a bit, but after I did it, the Title Bar has disappeared. I quite enjoy the aesthetic look of this lack, much more like a Linux look over a Windows one, but the main woe I have with this is that I can no longer re-size windows by moving my cursor to the edge of it, nor can I move small windows. (as someone that often works with The GIMP and its myriad of small windows, this is a major annoyance)
I wouldn't mind this if all I did was use Firefox and Pidgin, but since I often do other things (as noted, The GIMP) it can be quite an irk. If an answer can be shared as to how to re-instate the Title Bar to my applications, many thanks will be given.
Next on my list, strange application closings. Pidgin seems to be doing this a bit, but since I use some plugins with it that aren't 100% stable, I place the blame on those, and it's a tolerable error. However, some other applications do the same thing, if they start at all. One of them is ZSNES, which runs when clicked only about 10% of the time. Restart as I may, it works so seldomly that I almost worry.
While I can definitely tolerate this, I more wonder about why they malfunction so.
Next, is a hard drive issue. I have an 80 gb hard drive, which I had full access to when I was on Windows XP, but after I partitioned... Incorrectly when installing Linux, I lost all the data that I had before, and only 16 gb to work with for spare space. Losing the data wasn't a big deal, it was mostly music and movies, and my important data was backed up, so what I more want is access to the extra 64 gb that seems to be in limbo. (I should say 59, as I set my swap to 5 gb, much too much for the 768 mb of RAM, this would be good to change as well if possible, but I'm not too picky)
Here's a sudo fdisk -l
(should help)
Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xf9d10e91
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 2432 19535008+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 2433 9729 58613152+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
Disk /dev/mmcblk0: 127 MB, 127139840 bytes
8 heads, 32 sectors/track, 970 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 256 * 512 = 131072 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/mmcblk0p1 1 970 124111+ 6 FAT16
I have some other things I wish to know about Linux, but they aren't errors per se, and I'd like these taken care of first anyways.
Many thanks in advance to those that help.
