Backup Program that Can Store Backups on a Network Drive

Asked by Stephen Rynas

Backup programs should be able to store backups on a network drive. For example, many routers come with USB ports where a USB flash drive or USB hard drive and be attached. Current backup programs do not yet seem fully compatible with that approach.

Additionally, when restoring a file or files, the user should be able to select the files to be restored. The user should also be able to view all files that are contained in a backup.

Simple Backup, seems to have the best conceptual approach, but it is not yet fully reliable.

Deja Dup, the current Ubuntu backup program is terrible, no ability to select the file(s) to be restored. No ability to view the files that have been stored.

Back in Time seems OK, but I was not able to get it to work with the USB hard drive. There appear to be solution available, but it would be better if the program were upgraded.

I would like to suggest that Ubuntu upgrade one or more of these backup programs so that they work withf USB ports attached to routers and that the user be able to view all backup files and to select the backup file(s) to be restored.

A suggestion for Ubuntu product enhancement would not seem to be a "bug". Even if were considered a "bug", the "bug" report would be placed with the program developers, not Ubuntu. Still have valid suggestion on your part. I am hoping to motivate the Ubuntu development team to work on this. Launchpad needs to have a "suggestion box" option.

There used to be brainstorm.ubuntu.com but it is now gone
If you add the words "wishlist" or "feature" it may be useful.

Shares on routers can use varied technology to share. If one runs an sftp service you can use rsync to it easily (for example)

The router has an FTP feature, which I have not yet explored. The posts that I have read imply a bit of tweaking to make the connection. I have not yet pursued this approach. (One post said that their issue with Back in Time was resolved by using NFS instead of CIFS in the FSTAB file. Again, another variation that I have not had time to fully investigate.)

Simple Backup uses SMP, as one option, for making the connection to the USB port. I was finally able to get Simple Backup to work with the router, but reliability unfortunately has been a bit of an issue. Works well on one computer and only sporadically on another!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Hopefully, someone from the Ubuntu development team will eventually run across this suggestion and be motivated enough to encourage and work with the backup program maintainers to enhance their programs.
