startx problem

Asked by Herry

Hello,

I just downloaded & finishedinstalling Ubuntu Server v7.10 on VM Ware 4.5.2.
I didn't customize the modules at all when doing the installation.

When it finish booting it shows the text mode or runlevel 2.
I type the command 'startx', but I was told that the X is not installed yet and I follow the instruction to install using apt-get install xinit.
After it installed then I try to do startx again, but the result is:

xauth: creating new authority file /home/herry/.serverauth.3976

X: cannot stat /etc/X11/X (No such file or directory), aborting.
giving up.
xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

Please advise what I should do.
Thanks in advance
Herry

Hi,

I didn't exactly remember. But when it prompted me to install any server's software, I didn't choose at all and keep continue the installation.
And after that it seemed that it didn't prompt me to choose any installation package.

Does the Desktop Packing do available for Ubuntu Server Edition?

What should I do to check it?

Hello I got error after trying:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

It says: E: unable to write to /var/cache/apt
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
(Trouble started after a failed 7.10 to 8.04 upgrade)

Please provide exact commands to help me.
