Installation Problem Confused.. Intel Firmware.. bcm43XX issue..

Asked by Krish

Hello,
I am a complete newbie to Ubuntu and have searched the forum for long and have got no answers or some confusing answers for Ubuntu installation.
My questions are as follows:

1. Installation takes a very long time. When the CD boots, i get to a brown colored screen within 5 mins, but i have to wait a really long time for the 2 icons 'Examples' or 'Install' to come up - like about 35 - 40 minutes. Then when I click on Install, nothing seems to happen. I have done this many a times and have waited for as long as till 8 hours ( then dozed off in my chair or would have waited longer ;) ). First, I thought it was a h/w issue, but now I am not so sure coz my Windows is working fine for the past 3 weeks.

2. I get the error msg for broadcom wireless adapter that needs something called as 'ndiswrapper' that i read on one of your forums. The forums give a list of commands to type. But what i do not understand is where to type them. Also, if Ubuntu cannot find the specified drivers shouldn't it just skip the process and let me install the drivers(ndiswrapper) later ? ?

3. I also get an error msg during the bootup which says 'intel fwh' not found. I found a couple of answers to this, again with commands, but am confused as to where to type them. Same thing here too. Can I not deal with it later afetr the installation ? ?

What i have done till now:
1. Disabled all n/w devices (as was said in one of the forums)
2. F6 and there was a line that came up. I just added 'acpi=on' between the spaces.
3.During startup when i get the brown screen, i depressed CTRL+ALT+F2'. There comes a command prompt (i guess thats the 'terminal'), where i typed 'ps -ef' and then got a long list of things. Then the command 'kill -INT' which resulted in nothing for the next 20 mins so shut down the system.

Tried a lot of other minor things too. But now i know my intuition's not so good.

By the way, my system specs are as follows:
Compaq Presario Laptop V2000 series - V2625TS, to be precise.
RAM - 256 MB.
HDD - 40 GB. Of which i have reserved 20 GB for Ubuntu.
Intel Celeron M processor.
Broadcom Wireless Adapter.
Realtek Fast Ethernet NIC.

Tahnk you very much for reading this and hope you can help me rsolve this problem.
Hope to become a UNIX master one day..!!!

And lastly THANK YOU to you guys for shipping the CDs so quickly.

Slow booting/install:

Maybe it's because of your RAM - but it's not normall... If I were you, I'll try to install from AlternateCD.

bcm43XX:

After install run Restricted Driver Manager (in System→Administration) and allow system to download and use non-free firmware.

HELLO all,
I am typing this message from my Mozilla browser in UBUNTU...!!!
I have just got the internet up and working and would like to thank all of you who have helped me.

The way I solved my problem:
Since I was not able to install, I lent this installation CDs to my friends and they could install this successfully.
And I received this back yesterday and I thought that I should give it one more last try.
And voila, as soon as the CD booted and I clicked on the install icon, the installation screen popped up!!

Seems that I could not install it coz I had not exercised the spirit of UBUNTU!!!

THANK YOU once again and now back to exploring my new OS!!
