How to choose a new default browser for ubuntu 12.04

Asked by Julianloui

Currently I have Firefox and Google Chrome installed as my browsers in a Ubuntu 12.04 system. Firefox appears to be the default browser but I see both browsers' icons on the screen.

(1) How can I be sure that only one is enabled at a time?
(2) Where can I find them and pick one or the other as a current default browser?

Many websites advise the following path of action: but Ubuntu says that there's no Settings Manager!
System Settings --> Settings Manager --> Preferred applications

I am trying to fix a Juno webmail problem by updating my Juno e-mail version at www.juno.com. But Juno tells me that my Firefox browser (from Ubuntu 12.04) is blocking the action. I feel that only if I knew how to replace Firefox as my Ubuntu browser, I might be able to help myself a little in solving my Juno webmail problem.

Thank you all very much.

Just to clarify, you want the Juno webmail to run via Chrome? Is this the issue?

Thanks

Yes. But I don't see the Chrome icon at the moment. Thanks.

Another question:

How can i set up a root account? As of now I am the system's only user and administrator but I can't get into /root in oerder to set up a .bashrc alias file. I take it the password for /root differs from that of the Administrator.

You don't need to "setup" the rpot accout. It is disabled for a tonne of reasons, mostly surrounding system security. There is a bashrc in the skel folder like on all Linux distributions. If you are still convinced (for whatever reason) that you want access to the /root folder, you can run:

sudo -i

You will become root but the shell settings from your user will carry over and the pwd will change to /root

If you make a desktop launcher, you can make it open Chrome immediately to the webmail page. You can even set an icon for it of the mail provider for prettiness :-)

google-chrome http://webmail.juno.com
