setting up remote desktop

Asked by kevin

I can use rdp from any winxp computer to remote into my winxp computer at home, but when I try to use rdp from a winxp computer to access my ubuntu computer at home, it fails to connect. I have remote desktop set up on my ubuntu computer at home and is set up to be accessed. I used network tools to locate the available port for the dhcp address of my ubuntu computer and changed the port forwarding setup on my netgear router to use that available port on my ubuntu computer, but it still fails to connect. Any suggestions?

To connect to an Ubuntu machine you will use a VNC client as opposed to an RDP client. My favorite is the open source UltraVNC which is available at http://www.ultravnc.com

I had also tried VNC, but figured out the problem when I got home. I have a two-port kvm for my WinXP and Ubuntu machines; so I had to change the remote desktop preferences by unchecking the 'ask you for confirmation' option. Thanks for getting back with me so quickly and I will post this request as solved.
