Last time you unplugged the device, did you use the safe removal feature before physically unplugging it?

What file system does the USB partition use?

Thanks

I have to back up on this problem. I upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04LTS. Now am told it only partially upgraded and currently unable to boot up normally.

Boot up into recovery mode, select "Fix broken packages" and then "resume normal boot", run update-manager and check for and install all available updates. That *SHOULD* fix your problem.

Hope this helps

When I restarted I came on the boot screen ie black screen resembling the terminal. Then I have to run the
command startx in order to get to Ubuntu Desktop 12.04LST. Unable to use recovery or any other mode

Question how do I boot up into Ubuntu Desktop 12.04LTS?
Once I am in Ubuntu 12.04LTS I cannot mount my cd/dvd or my USB ports

Question How do I mount those places?
Question How do I turn on my audio?

I can use the internet without problems
I can use e mail without problems.

It appears you do not have the necessary permissions to mount devices (policykit is denying you access). This is very abnormal...
You could try a second time to fix dependency problems (sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade && sudo dpkg --configure -a), but it may be best to try a fresh install.
