error: failed to initialize HAL [edgy] and pppoe unreliable

Asked by jason sanche

Just installed edgy (10/25 stable release). It worked fine at first (except for a xmms double size bug) then the pppoe connection dropped after restart and I'm getting an error just after startup: failed to initialize HAL. Then upon re-configuring pppoe the connection dropped but there is still activity through the adsl router, although the latest attempt to restart had the same HAL error but the pppoe is working now, but I predict it will drop after sleeping or restarting. Other devices also arent being recognized/mounted?? such as usb flash drive and floppy disk (error msg: mount: /dev/ is not a block device) but cd mounts fine.

I wonder if it might be a bios issue, as I changed the 'reset configuration data' to 'enabled' before the problem started though now it is back to disabled.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Well, the problem is solved, it must have been something in the bios settings which I changed back to solve the problem.
thanks

I am having this problem with HAL but I did not change anything in the BIOS. I had downloaded a few programs of interest and all worked well. The following session when I booted I had this box with HAL not initialized. Everything else is fine, any ideas Jason? I don't know where to start! Dennis

That darn 'failed to initialize HAL' has come now and then since my first post. Usually a restart takes care of it, or re-configuring pppoe or perhaps whatever other internet connection you have. Sorry not much specific help. Good luck:)
