Ubuntu freezes moments after I commence installation, 7.10 Desktop

Asked by Insomniak

Hey all, I am trying to install Ubuntu on my PC.
I have more than the recommended amount of RAM (1 gig) and plenty of hard disk space(around 85 GB).

So, on to my problem. I managed to get Ubuntu burnt to a disk after about 3 days. I pop in the disk and re-boot my computer. I hit F8 a few times during startup, I get the Ubuntu screen (the one that reads "Start or Install Ubuntu", etc.) and being the cautious guy that I am, I first check the CD integrity (or whatever it says). It reads no errors and I then proceed to reboot the computer. I get to the Ubuntu screen and choose to "Start or Install Ubuntu". I am greeted by the Ubuntu logo and the orange load bar(I assume) bouncing back and forth. After 30 seconds or so the bar's movement gets choppy and eventually stops. Shortly afterwards, my computer goes silent (as in I can't hear the fan, I can't see the blinking load light, or any of the other beeps and blips that tell me it is busy) and so I waited about 5 minutes, got a snack, went to the bathroom, and came back to find nothing had happened. So I hit the restart button on the computer and go for it again execpt in safe-graphics mode. Same thing happens. So at this point I'm running out of options, I restart the computer, try again, and when it freezes I put a piece of paper on the monitor and trace everything on the screen. I decided to sleep while it (hopefully) loaded and 9 hours later, nada. I placed the paper on the monitor and nothing had changed. Next, I plan to try the alternate CD (seems to fix all sorts of problems) and then go from there. So, yeah, sorry about the wall'o'text and thank you for your time.
