Mouse automatically opens any thing the pointer lands on.

Mouse automatically selects whatever the pointer lands on. I've tried three different mice, but they all do the same in Ubuntu (12.04). I can't just move the pointer out of the way to read something, I have to be very careful where I move it to, otherwise it will open whatever it lands on. I have no problem with mouse when working on Windows.

Have you tried the Unity2D session. It is selectable at the login page.

Brilliant! I found it in Universal Access/Pointing & Clicking/Hover Click which was in the "on" position. It's been bugging me for ages. Many thanks Andrew.
