".chm" files are typically help files for the MS Windows platform. What specific file are you trying to read, as it doesn't seem that Windows help files would be relevant on Ubuntu.

I'm not sure what you're trying to open, but .chm is compiled HTML which can be read by Firefox (with a little bit of help). Try installing the plug-in from:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3235

hey i have a solution for you. There's an alternative program to open chm files in ubuntu linux.
You just need to download the xchm program. you can download it from the terminal by typing the below command:

" $ sudo apt-get install xchm "
thats it from now on you can view chm files in xchm application.

apt-cache search chm viewer to find other viewers.
I personally prefer kchmviewer (I use it in gnome)

I hope you have been able to resolve your problems with .chm files. If not, here is a very helpful article: http://www.64bitjungle.com/ubuntu/viewing-chm-files-and-converting-chm-to-html-or-pdf-files-in-linux/
