Also get numerous "internal system error" messages after wifi connected. usually quits giving message several times. Don't know if the message is for the same system error or several different errors.

ran the above commands and copy/pasted the results but must have forgot to click the button below.
after running above commands UPDATE MANAGER started and installed several updates. Got several error messages during update process and after restart. These are messages I have been getting for several weeks.
System Program Problem Detected - got this one 3 times
Sorry ubuntu 12.04 has experienced an internal error
Sorry the application update apt-xapian has closed unexpectantly
Got the above messages while UPDATE Manager was running.
After restart got the "System Program Problem Detected again.
If I click the "report the problem" button I usually get the above errorr messages.
I can re-run the above commands you wanted to get the terminal messages if you want.

The results look promising.
Now try to do an update with the following commands
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
and check if there is any error or warning message left (please copy/paste everythiing into this question document).
Based on that output it should be possible to verify, if there is any error or warning still open.

Update Manager ran successfully this AM. Was still getting Internal Systen Error popup windows but not since last update. Hope that fixes everything.

It seems that the problem with failing updates is now solved.
If you get new System Error popups please check what they are about - if they are related not to updating or apt-xapian but something different, please create a new question document for that other topic.
If you do not experience any problems with this current topic any more, please mark that question as solved.
