looking for a media player for streaming

i have ubuntu 11.10
im looking for a good media player. i stream movies and sports.

Ubuntu 11.10 is EOL (End Of Life). Is not supported anymore. No updates - no new software - no support in general.

Download and install (replace 11.10) either 12.04 LTS (Long Term Support) or 13.04 (9 months of support).

As for a good media player, I think you already know the answer. VLC . (or smplayer).

If you are intending to use Gnome then gnome-mplayer is like smplayer but will not haul in all the Qt packages as dependencies. Both are nothing more than frontends for mplayer so wasting space when something doing the same job using a lot of what is already installed makes sense.
