Is there a way to have different desktop icons in each workspace

I use each workspace on GNOME for a different purpose -- a) work, b) VM, c) programming, d) personal. I like to use the desktop as a scratchpad of sorts. Is there a way to tell GNOME I want a different desktop folder associated with each workspace?
