Did you read ANY of what I wrote?

You need tp uninstall the packages from your output that have 'rc' at the start, not the whole line.....

so the commands will be:

sudo dpkg -P linux-image-3.8.0-19-generic
sudo dpkg -P linux-image-3.8.0-20-generic
sudo dpkg -P linux-image-extra-3.8.0-19-generic
sudo dpkg -P linux-image-extra-3.8.0-20-generic

Nothing more, you have 4 extra kernels listed, this will remove them.

My intention is to remove all the unwanted image files which are removed with synaptic or apt..e.g. right from 3.0.0 to 3.5.0.. all initrd and vmlinuz files should not be there..is it possible ?
Thanks

Maybe there is a discrepancy between dpkg and the kernel boot files - in a sense that dpkg thinks the packages and files have been deleted, but the files are still there. This might also be influenced by the presence of the extlinux package.

Please provide the output of the terminal commands

dpkg --search \*initrd.img-\*-generic \*vmlinuz-\*-generic
ls -la /boot

The dpkg... command shows that package management knows only about four 3.8 kernels, but there are dozens of files that stem from older kernel versions. I do not know what the reason for that might be.

I think you can delete all files in the /boot directory related to older kernel versions without negative effects.

The commands would be

sudo rm /boot/*-2.6.32-10-*
sudo rm /boot/*-3.0.0-*
sudo rm /boot/*-3.2.0-*
sudo rm /boot/*-3.5.0-*
sudo update-grub

This should end with a system that provides only the current 3.8 kernels on the grub selection screens.
You should monitor your system, whether the effect that files remain in /boot despite removing the package continues to be shown.

Please copy/paste the output of the commands
sudo update-grub
ls -la /boot
into this question document that we can see the results.

Can you help with this problem?
