IOAPIC boot and X start issues on 7.10 x64 laptop

Asked by jadwhig

The install went rocky at best with both standalone install and the network assisted install.
With some mods to the kernel params it booted and installed the restricted drivers. Then this is where it gets interesting. After this the boot was random at best with IOAPIC interrupt and then the hang on the CDROM drive. The boot would randomly pass the CDROM hang and boot correctly this was about 1 out of 5 boots.
Checked the disk with parted and /dev/sda (nvidia sata controller) and the disk had an msdos grub format. Forced this to gpt and it went back to msdos on the reinstall?

With the network assisted text install the X server would not boot and it looked like the restricted drivers only partially installed. Hit the nvidia site on the boot issues and followed what they said and no go.

Would love to get this machine to boot. I know it will run it seems just boot issues. AMD64 x2 TZ-55 chipset. Let me know what you need.

Can you try the following:-

Try the 32-bit version of Ubuntu. I assume you're using the 64-bit version given you mention x64.

Try an alpha of the next release 8.04

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel-announce/2008-January/000367.html

8.04 isn't finished yet, but as this is a relatively new machine it may be better supported by the kernel in 8.04.

Can you help with this problem?
