Kjerryn,

Sorry, we need to go back to the begining. I didn't understand which steps you took. Did you follow the instrutions of the tutorial that I gave to you? What's happening then?

If you can, please answer this aditional questions:
What version of Ubuntu do you use?
What brand and model of graphics board do you use?
Did you try System -> Administration -> Restricted Drivers Manager in the first place?
If you try, what was the system response?

Thanks,

Helton

kjerryn, the message about not needing a restricted driver means you have an open source drive for which the restricted driver doesn't change anything and is therefore not needed. You should be able to enable your desktop effects without making any changes. However, ATI cards have never been easy so no guarantee. If it won't enable, let us know. Maybe you will need to install a proprietary driver via a different method or maybe it's an issue with the xorg.conf file.

I have very little experience with ATI and what experience I do have was all negative. If you can't enable desktop effects it probably means you don't have the right driver. If it works for you, probably the easiest way to get the right driver would be envy (http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html). Other than that I don't know.

Hi kjerryn,

I did a search about your graphics board and the driver support for it. This board is only supported by the open source driver developed by the X.org project. The 3D part is made by the DRI project and the stage of the Rage 128 driver isn't enough for the 3D desktop effects. Sorry but you can't get these effects with your actual hardware.

I'm new to Ubuntu.. Few days ago downloaded latest Ubuntu 8.10.. Had the same problem with running .run file (latest ATI driver for my 9550). I tried eveything I found on forums, nothing seamed to work, then I tried

1. rightclick on driver
2. selected "open with" from the menu
3. then at the bottom of the window, clicked on the little triangle before "use a custom command" and
4. entered "sh".
5. then I clicked "open" button
and setup started.
