unable to handle kernel paging request

Asked by Willem Hobers

I have now several times had, what might be called a Black Screen of Death.
It happens when copying files from a network drive.
Running: Ubuntu 13.04, GNOME3

I can provide screenshots of the message, but I can not find the right logfile.

I want to report this "Oops" as a bug. (Or does anyone here have better ideas? Please advice.)

Question:
- in which logfile can I find the error?
- what is the right place/package against which to report this bug?

The error text is:

BUG: Unable to handle kernel paging request at <...>
IP: <...> CIFSSMBQAllEs+<...> [cifs]
<...>
Oops: 0000 [#1] SMP

It is very difficult to debug a Kernel Crash.

You can find more info about the problem either in dmesg or /var/log/kern.log

Also the /var/log/boot.log might contains useful info about the crash.

If this is a bug you should report it here in Launchpad bug tracker. Report a bug for linux

Open a terminal and apply this command

    ubuntu-bug linux

let the apport to collect all the info and then it will redirect you to the Launcphad page where you will report your bug.

Please be descriptive and cooperate with developers if they ask for something.

This is definitely a kernel panic but I cannot debug the "Call Trace".
