Ubuntu 13.04 installation does not detect Win 7

Asked by Ulrich Baustian

My Computer has WinXP and Win7 running and I want install Ubuntu 13.04 along with these operating systems. When installing Ubuntu from CD it says: "No detected operating system" and offers only to use the whole harddisk for Ubuntu, though I have generated partitions for Swap, Ubuntu and Home as recommended in Wiki.
When I stop the installation, Ubuntu opens as a Life-Version and I can see under "Files" all partitions. I can also restart and return to WinXP or Win7. It's all there, just the Ubuntu installation CD doesn't recognize the existing operating systems.

In the meantime I was able to install Ubuntu, but can't start it.

The reason for not being able to install Ubuntu along with WinXP and Win7 was, that Ubuntu can handle only 4 partitions on one harddisk. As I had Win7, WinXP, Swap, Ubuntu and Home, these were one too many. As WinXP is a logical partition within an extended partition, I have enlarged th extended partition an put Home into that extended partition. Now Ubuntu sees only 4 partitions and is able to handle them.

The installation worked fine. I defined the Swap partition as swap, the Ubuntu partition as \ and the Home partion as \home and sda as root. When I restart Win7 and WinXP show up, but no Ubuntu.

Thanks for your help.
In the meantime I have reinstalled Win XP, Win7 and Ubuntu 13.04 and everything is working fine.
For the next boot problems I will follow your advice. I have already burned the Boot-Repair CD.
